In Verde’s last cycle, my story partner and I were assigned a story about affirmative action and its effect outside of college admissions. We decided that for a topic so tied to race and equity, we needed to include a diverse group of sources. My story partner and I interviewed over a dozen people from a variety of grade levels and ethnicities, asking them all the same question: What is the responsibility of schools to ensure diversity? All of our sources had different perspectives on the issue that made me reconsider my own biases. While not all of our sources were able to appear in the final story design, the diversity we included added another dimension to the story. Ultimately, we learned that diversity cannot be talked about from only one perspective.
